We have visceral and emotional reactions to the typographic compositions we make and encounter in the world, often deeply or unconsciously affected in ways that are hard to articulate. We also have habits that may or may not serve us. As designers, we are rarely objective about our own process and work. Attraction (and repulsion) to motifs, styles, colors, shapes, typefaces, to things we ‘like’ or ‘dislike’, guide us in ways we might not even recognize, limiting potential and guiding us to make derivative work. And how important is originality for a designer anyway?

In this two day workshop, Paul Sahre, renown New York designer, will guide students through a process to help participants identify and develop their own unique typographic style.

Through a series of four typographic based exercises, students will develop quick unpolished projects that may take different forms (book jacket, poster, broadside, etc) that will explore the bounds of comfort and convention, in an attempt to go beyond superficial judgments in search of originality when designing with typography.
